The Science of makeup...

Hey beauties, today I will not be giving any tutorials today because am down with cold but will be giving you something pretty soon.
Earlier today while surfing the net,I stumbled into an article that caught my attention and am sure this piece might also interest a lot of you,so I tot I should share. Note that this is not my piece but it will interest you to know that nature works at its best and shouldn't be taken for granted.....

The Science of Makeup

This post was chosen as an Editor's Selection for ResearchBlogging.orgI couldn’t help but be intrigued that my stiffest competition for winning the $10,000 Blogging Scholarship was a makeup blogger. What is it about cosmetics that is so appealing? Why do people wear makeup, and what might have caused early man to play around with blush and lipstick? Well, like everything else in life, a lot can be explained by science.
Makeup has been around for centuries. The earliest records of makeup use date back to around 3000 BC when ancient Egyptians used soot and other natural products to create their signature look. Evidence suggests that the origins of makeup may go back much further. Our closest relatives, Neandertals, may have used colored pigments on their skin some 50,000 years ago, and paint pigments date back 75,000 years, suggesting people may have used body paint before they wore clothes. Most people will say that makeup makes women look younger and more attractive, but the question is, why? What is it about a little eye shadow, some pink cheeks and red lips that makes a woman look prettier? Like a lot in life, it’s probably about sex.

Makeup works because it’s a good lie. In much of the animal kingdom, females advertise their youth, health and sexual availability through physical signals. Whether it be red rumps, special scents or elaborate behaviors, girls of the animal world know that sex sells, and they make it well known to the men in the area that they are ready for and capable of producing some stellar offspring. Like a peacock strutting his feathers, women do this to convince the opposite sex that they’re a good choice for a mate. But in humans, these signals are far less pronounced. Women’s bodies don’t advertise fertility loudly like our closest relatives. Instead, it’s almost impossible to tell if a woman is ovulating – almost. There are subtle signs if you know what to look for, and even though they might not realize that they realize it, men (and women!) do take notice. Studies have shown that women’s faces are more attractive to both sexes during the fertile phase of their menstrual cycle. Makeup works because it exaggerates or even completely fabricates these signs of fertility and sexual availability, thus making a woman seem more appealing.
Those ancient Egyptians were on to something with the eye makeup, for example. Women, in contrast with men, tend to be naturally darker around their eyes. Eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara all enhance this effect, thus making a face look more feminine. Studies by Richard Russell at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania have shown that the darker the eyes are in relation to the rest of the face, the more attractive a woman appears, while the opposite is true for men. In fact, the darkness of the eyes compared to the rest of the face is so important, the exact same face can be perceived as either male or female depending on the level of contrast – just take a look at the images on the right, which are of the same face with the same eyes and lips but one has a lighter skin tone, creating more contrast. Eye makeup also makes eyes seem wider and larger, and bigger eyes are perceived as more youthful.
As with eyes, Russell found that women have darker mouths than men of the same skin tone. Manipulating lips to be darker than the rest of a woman’s face makes it appear more feminine and attractive. But it turns out that the color of the lipstick matters, too. When women are ovulating, the relative concentration of the hormone estrogen rises in comparison to progesterone. This hormonal shift enhances vascular blood flow under the skin’s surface, which has a number of side effects. Women near ovulation (when they’re most fertile) report that they’re more easily turned on and have more interest in sex. They also tend to have redder lips! By putting on reddening lipstick, women are accentuating a natural signal of fertility. On top of that, blood flow also increases during arousal, so those red lips are not only saying that she’s young and healthy – they’re specifically giving the illusion that she’s interested in YOU, which of course is bound to draw attention. That increased blood flow also pinkens the cheeks, so blush, too, adds to this effect.
But it’s not just bold colors that make a difference. Foundation and cover-up also play a large role in making a woman look more attractive. That’s because we are naturally drawn to even skin tones. As our skin ages, it tends to get discolorations, whether they be from the sun, scars, or other kinds of damage. So it’s not surprising that an even skin tone, no matter what the topology of the face is, strikes us as younger and thus more attractive. One study found that eye makeup and foundation were most important in explaining why makeup makes women appear more attractive and younger. Again, it’s about producing offspring – youth in and of itself isn’t all that useful except in the context of sex, fecundity, and fertility.
But, I hear my female readers saying, MY(boyfriend/husband/whoever) says that I look prettier without makeup! Well, it’s true that when you poll men about their makeup preferences, as many as one in five says their significant other wears way too much makeup, while one in ten wishes that women didn’t wear makeup at all. While that’s certainly a nice sentiment, their actions speak louder than their words. Study after study has found that when shown pictures of women with and without their makeup, men consistently rate images with makeup as more attractive, confident, and healthier. Men also think women wearing makeup come off as more intelligent and having higher earning potentials and more prestigious jobs. I’m not saying wearing makeup is more likely to get you hit on at a bar… but Nicolas Guéguen is. He found women wearing makeup were approached sooner and by more men.
When you look at the science, it’s no wonder that more than $40 billion dollars a year is spent on cosmetics. Makeup works, and it does so because our bodies are programmed to perceive sexual signals from the coloration of our faces. Makeup tricks our brains just enough for it to be worth the time and effort if you want to look hotter. Of course, modern media and the way women are portrayed certainly helps boost sales. But makeup has been used for centuries in disparate and diverse cultures in strikingly similar ways for a reason. In the end, we are drawn to makeup is that it taps into our primal urge to find a young, healthy mate who will produce lots of kids so that we can pass on our genes. As Theodosius Dobzhansky might have predicted, even makeup only makes sense in the light of evolution.

Dont be afraid to wear the blue..here is how..

The blue can be associated with the sea and believe me when I say its a perfect shade for the eyes when worn correctly. This trend is dated back to the Victorian period when blue to the eyes was considered innocent and beautiful. Although many find it confusing, unattractive and difficult to pull this look off.
The blue around the eyes can be very stunning if you carefully apply the right shade for your eyes and skin tone.for fair skin, choose fair shades and deep shades for dark skin tone.avoid too much shimmer.keep your eyeshadow contained to your lids and crease. Avoid smearing it over your brow bone.apply your blue shadow with a damp brush for an intense shade and bright hue.use blue in moderation so its easy to handle. To ensure that your bold eye-shadow colors don't look cheap, use professional brushes and blend properly.
Its best to use two shades,a light and a dark.keep in mind that dark shades can make your eyes recede,so make sure you don't place color above your crease line.you can skip the black liner if you must.try a deeper shade of blue.
Blue eye-shadow makes your eyes pop,so if you are afraid to pull it off like me,try it with a neutral or light pink lip color, also perfect.especially for beginners.
For eyes-LA colours tropical blue eye-shadow
For lips-dark romance vibrant demiglaze lip gloss by Gucci.
NB... Never match eye colours with your outfit. Not advisable.pay attention to the face not the top.lol

Go Nude:wear Natural to Modern Day Glamour

The natural look.It looks so naturally prettier than caked on make up.We all want to show off that natural beauty.so I ll suggest you look better naked…lol ok,this is what I mean….Somewhere between freshly scrubbed and totally done up is a face that lets you look just like you… but better! “A nude makeup look is polished and pretty and because you’re simply enhancing your skin tone, it’ll never appear as if you tried too hard. The Nude is basically effortless. There are plenty of places to go wrong though, and sometimes trying to look like you aren’t wearing make up requires even more make up! Remember that the nude look is luscious lips and fluttery eyes, rather than smoky eyes and heavy foundation look. But nude should not mean one thing to all people.its a choice.some may want an accentuated eyes and nude lips, some,a nude eyes and accentuated lips, while some prefer to go out all nude.whatever you go for, picking fleshy colors that complements your skin tone will prevent you from looking washed-out. So here are my tips for getting it right; It can be so easy to slip into routine when you are applying make up.its very important to know your color and Test it first…Test any new make up, preferably before you buy it, but definitely before you wear it!You’d be surprised how many people choose a colour that looks wrong, and gives them a ghostly, washed out, look.
For fair skin:honey and taupe.
For medium:try caramel and tawny
For dark skin:gold, chocolate and terra-cotta will do.No matter your skin tone, the best neutrals is going naked.these guidelines will make you choose the right color.
The best step to having an even skin tone is by applying your foundation which is more important. At the same time, try not to apply a heavy base to avoid a cakey face.for an effortlessly even tone, use a tinted moisturiser or a sheer foundation.(if not,mix your regular light weight foundation with a pinch of your face moisturiser.this will give a sheer balance).this tone also gives you a glow.Keep your face from looking flat with a shimmery eye shadow or blush. Let your skin be your guide. Choose shadow and blush in the same color family as your skin tone, but a shade or two darker.if you are going for a totally nude face,Go lightly on the eyes. Your lids should take center stage, so brush on a separating mascara instead of a volumizing one, and skip eyeliner if u wish.(or line your inner eyes using a brown eye liner or lightly line with a black liner.do not smudge). Lips should be neither overly glossy nor completely matte. Apply a thin layer of lipstick using your fingers.for a little shine, dab a pinch of lip balm, this helps remove excess color for a stained finish. Another tip for a nude lip is applying your concealer or foundation as lipstick.
How to;apply your lip moisturiser on your lips then dab just a thin layer of your foundation or concealer and even out on lips(note to choose a tone in the same colour family as your skin tone, even with your lipstick).finally, apply just a tiny pinch of lip balm at the centre of your lip to plump out a bit.perfect that nude with a well groomed brow for a sultry finish.
The nude makeup is barely there, just like a no makeup makeup look, which makes it perfect for a day wear.

The Edgy Smokey Eyes

E

The smokey eyes have been a big style for quite awhile and there’s definitely no sign this particular trend is dying. whether, you are going for a party, wedding or whatever the occasion may be,the smokey look is one look you can pull off softly yet subtle or you can go for a full accentuated smokey eyes.there are various types and ways of achieving a smokey eyes.let me give you a step-by-step tutorial on how to get the perfect edgy smokey eye.
The key to the perfect smokey eye is proper blending. To achieve a perfect eyes, you must blend, blend and blend. You want to make sure colors are blended together flawlessly. I always advice my clients,if you must rush out of home, you can do without the eye shadow.never be in a hurry to apply the eye shadow.it’s important to pair your colors rightly. Nice mixes include: Soft gold base with deep purple on top, champagne base with bright blue and peach base with green hue, black base with brown, brown of different tones,as the list goes on…depending on what look or colour you are going for.
The key to keeping eyeshadow from greasing,is to keep eyelids oil-free….
Step 1-Startup with an eyeshadow base.a primer.this is an important aspect to achieving a flawless eyes. Prep the lid with an eye primer, this will help your eye makeup stay longer.there are also great primers used in achieving a perfect smokey eyes.some primer also come in different colours.i would recommend a primer in black(when going for a really dark smokey eyes).if not,use your regular primer.
Every now and then, makeup artist give advice on how well to achieve certain looks.there are basically no definite colours to this look, it only depends on how and what colours works perfect foryou. soyou can try different methods, colours and find out which works best for you. there are a few ways to achieve this look, but here is one very easy step especially for beginners,to give you that perfect edgy smokey eyes using your regular brown and black shadow.
Step 2-apply eyeliner -if you are going for a typical black, brown or grey smokey eye.bodly apply a pitch black eyeliner on the upper lash line, giving it a little wing(I prefer a cream eyeliner).(if you are looking for a sharp edge and can’t create one,use a tape to make a stencil, placing it in an angular position, then remove gently once you are done with your eye makeup).Gently smudge upwards in a c angle using a smudge brush.
Step 3-apply black shadow-directly on lid, then blend towards crease, making sure it smokes out and erases all fine lines(remember, the key to this look is blending).invest also in professional tools.
Step 4-apply brown shadow-on the crease and blend into black.(note that it is easier to add more than to take away, start with a light layer first, then gradually build into your liking).blend, blend and blend .
Step 5-repeat same steps for bottom lash-apply your eyeliner, blend, then pat your black shadow on,blend together, lastly apply your brown shadow, blend in colour together.you can also use a finger to give you a smudge effect.
Highlight your brow bone with a fleshy tone shadow, with the same colour, blend into crease to create a smokey effect.
Lastly, line your eyes using a black pencil, liquid or gel liner.i like to top this on to darken the eyes even more.
Again you must be careful not to move your darker colour way above your crease and make sure your brows are well groomed.
Be very careful. When applying around the edges of the eyes.make sure to have a firm grip of your brush to prevent smearing.
Double check your work, make sure your colours blend well and smokes out properly.finish off with several coats of mascara or if you are like me,put on a false lash as this will give you a striking edgy effect.this look is perfect with a nude lip.then we are done.easy*winks*.
